Car Rental in Sardinia

How to rent a car in Sardinia easily and at the best price

Renting a car is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to explore Sardinia. Many beautiful coves, small towns and interesting places are located far from railway lines and main bus routes. With a car, you are not tied to public transport schedules and can plan your days exactly as you like.

Where to Rent a Car

The easiest option is to pick up your car directly at the airport. Car rental offices are available at all three of

Sardinia’s main airports:
Olbia — a convenient choice for the Costa Smeralda, San Teodoro, Palau and the north-east of the island.
Alghero — ideal for Alghero, Stintino, Bosa, Castelsardo and north-western Sardinia.
Cagliari — best for southern Sardinia, including Villasimius, Pula, Chia and trips along the south coast.
You can also rent a car in larger towns, but airport locations usually offer a wider choice of vehicles.

What to Check Before Booking

Don’t choose a car based on the lowest price alone. Before booking, always check:
— the deposit amount;
— what type of credit or debit card is required;
— the insurance excess;
— what is included in the insurance;
— the fuel policy;
— mileage limits;
— pick-up and return conditions;
— the cost of an additional driver and child seat.
Pay particular attention to the card requirements. Rental companies have different policies, and cheaper rates often come with a higher deposit.

Which Car to Choose

For most trips around Sardinia, a standard compact car is more than enough. A small car is even more convenient in historic town centres and on narrow streets.
If you are planning to travel around the island with luggage or with your family, it is better to choose a slightly larger car.
In July and August, it is best to book your car in advance: good options at reasonable prices are usually the first to sell out.

Parking and Roads

There are no toll motorways in Sardinia, but distances on the map can sometimes be misleading. In mountainous areas, there are many winding roads, so a 100 km journey may take considerably longer than expected.

In towns, always pay attention to ZTL (Limited Traffic Zones), where you cannot drive without authorisation.

Parking spaces in Italy are usually marked by colour:

white — usually free;
blue — paid parking;
yellow — reserved parking, not for tourists.

— какая категория водительских прав требуется;
— входит ли страховка в стоимость;
— размер депозита и франшизы;
— включены ли шлемы;
— есть ли ограничение по километражу;
